Moped rider injured in U.S. 421 crash

A moped rider was injured Wednesday afternoon after running a red light and striking the side of an SUV on U.S. 421, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred just after 4 p.m. as a red Ford Explorer driven by 21-year-old Lucas Bunch of Monroe was turning left from Old U.S. 421 onto U.S. 421 toward Boone.

Bunch said he had a green arrow to turn and didn't see the red moped until it was inches from his door.

"I didn't even see him coming at all," Bunch said. "I pretty much felt the hit, I didn't see him."

Bunch suffered cuts on his wrists but did not seek treatment.

Watauga Medics rushed the moped rider, Dana Joseph Dunn, 44, of West Jefferson, to Watauga Medical Center, said Trooper Josh Hodges of the N.C. Highway Patrol. Dunn's injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, he said.

Hodges said the moped's top speed was likely around 20 mph.

Dunn was cited for failure to stop for a red light, Hodges said.
