Man suffers accidental gunshot wound

One person was transported to Watauga Medical Center at approximately 9 p.m. Thursday after the accidental discharge of a firearm.
The incident report indicates a man was unloading the handgun in his vehicle while traveling on U.S. 421. The gun discharged, striking the man in the leg.
The victim, who has not been identified, pulled into the parking lot of the Wilco Hess station at the intersection of U.S. 421 and N.C. 194 and called 911 from a cell phone.
Boone Police Department and Watauga Medics responded to the scene. The man was transported to Watauga Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the leg, where he was treated and released.
Det. Matt Stevens of the Boone Police Department said the incident did not appear suspicious and the victim will not be charged. There was no damage or harm outside of the vehicle.
Under North Carolina law, a loaded gun may be carried in plain sight in a vehicle without a permit. However, dependent on the circumstances, a person could potentially face a going armed to the terror of people misdemeanor charge. To conceal a handgun requires a permit.
