Man airlifted after gunshot wound
Medics and law enforcement responded to the 600 block of Greer Lane in Vilas around 11:30 p.m. and found a man suffering from a chest wound, said Capt. Dee Dee Rominger of the Watauga County Sheriff's Office. Rominger said it appears the injury may have been self-inflicted.
"We are not looking for suspects in this incident, and no one is in custody," Rominger said in an email.
About an hour after the call, a Wings Air Rescue helicopter flew to a landing zone near the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. to shuttle the victim to the Johnson City Medical Center. The man was conscious after the incident, said Craig Sullivan, director of Watauga Medics.
The victim was in stable condition in Johnson City, Tenn., as of Thursday morning, said Teresa Hicks, communications manager for Mountain States Health Alliance.
