Locals gather in memory of 9/11 fallen
by Kellen Moore
Community members gathered Tuesday morning in memory of the
lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and in the days that followed.
The brief memorial, hosted by the Watauga County Republican Party outside its headquarters at the Shoppes at Shadowline, started at 8:46 a.m. — the time that the first plane hit the World Trade Center 11 years ago.
Republican Party Chairman Matt Snyder shared his memories of being at Giants Stadium that morning and walking outside to see smoke pouring from the buildings.
"The world changed just a few minutes later as we learned what was going on," Snyder said.
He asked those in attendance to remember the families of the people who died, the emergency workers who responded to the tragedy and the military men and women who served their country when called.
"That's what Americans do; they come to the call when their services are needed," Snyder said.
Commissioner David Blust led the group in prayer, and Boone resident Anita Laymon led the group in song.
