Library to honor former employee

by Allison Haver

Evelyn Shook Johnson, a 35-year employee of the Watauga County Public Library, would have been 55 on Jan. 29.

The well-liked librarian died suddenly at the age of 54 in January 2012.

In September, the Watauga County Board of Commissioners voted in favor of naming the library's meeting room after Johnson.

The Evelyn Johnson Memorial Committee, formed by Monica Caruso, county librarian, worked to get the lettering for the meeting room up before Johnson's birthday.

"Our committee wanted to have the lettering up by her birthday; it is now up above the doors in the foyer," said Jackie Cornette, branch librarian and outreach specialist for the Western Watauga Branch library. "We are very thankful for the donations we have received and will continue to take donations until March 15."

The library's meeting room dedication will be at 2 p.m. May 10, according to Caruso.

"We would like the 'new' meeting room to honor Evelyn and all that she contributed to this community," she said.

Additionally, the Friends of the Library is co-sponsoring and accepting donations for a Kiwanis college scholarship in Johnson's name that will go to a Watauga High School senior who excels in community service. Johnson was actively involved with Kiwanis of Boone, holding many offices and having received many awards.

The Watauga County Public Library welcomes donations that will be used to purchase a photo plaque and signage and put materials into the library in memory of Johnson.

Checks can be made to either the Watauga County Public Library or the Friends of the Library and mailed to or dropped off at the Watauga Library at 140 Queen St. in downtown Boone.
