Library to honor former employee

Evelyn Shook Johnson, a 35-year employee of the Watauga County Public Library, would have been 55 on Jan. 29.
The well-liked librarian died suddenly at the age of 54 in January 2012.
In September, the Watauga
County Board of Commissioners voted in favor of naming the library's meeting room after Johnson.
The Evelyn Johnson Memorial Committee, formed by Monica Caruso, county librarian, worked
to get the lettering for the meeting room up before Johnson's birthday.

The library's meeting room dedication will be at 2 p.m. May 10, according to Caruso.
"We would like the 'new' meeting room to honor Evelyn and all that she contributed to this
community," she said.
Additionally, the Friends of
the Library is co-sponsoring and accepting donations for a Kiwanis college scholarship in
Johnson's name that will go to a Watauga High School senior who excels in community service.

The Watauga County Public Library welcomes donations that will be used to purchase a photo plaque and signage and put materials into the library in memory of Johnson.
Checks can be made to either the Watauga County Public Library or the Friends of the Library and mailed to or dropped off at the Watauga Library at 140 Queen St. in downtown Boone.
