expected to be larger than usual at the Watauga County Education Board meeting
Watauga County Schools announced, on Monday, that tonight's school board meeting will be held in the Watauga High School auditorium rather than Margaret E. Gragg Education Center.
One of the items on tonight's agenda is the "Book Challenge - 3rd Level of Appeal," which is in regards to the 10th grade honors English class novel, House of Spirits, which was protested by a WHS parent last October.
On Monday, WHS Student's Right To Read Facebook page posted that Franklin Graham announced to his employees that Samaritan's Purse was closing at 2 p.m. and instructed the organization's employees to "bring a snack and go to the school board meeting room and fill up all the seats."
Purse media relations' coordinator Karina Peterson said the organization would
not be closing at 2 p.m. unless there was heavy snow and that Graham has
encouraged staff members who have children in school to attend the board
"I just went and
spoke to Franklin and he said, "As a parent and grandparent I'm very
concerned about what our children are asked to read, and in some cases, forced
to read," Peterson said in an email.
The meeting starts at 7 p.m. tonight and doors to the auditorium will open at 6 p.m.
