James Taylor to play Obama fundraiser
by Jeff Eason
James Taylor is famous for
going to Carolina in his mind. In the near future, that thought will become a
reality.
A spokesperson for Westglow Resort
and Spa in Blowing Rock announced Wednesday that Grammy Award-winning musician
James Taylor will perform at the resort at 7 p.m. on Oct. 12.
Taylor will be performing as
part of a fundraising dinner and concert to support President Barack Obama's
re-election campaign.
Tickets are $500 for student
and youth (those younger than 30), $1,000 for adults, with special packages for
$2,500 per person that include the performance, dinner and a conversation with Taylor.
For more information or to
order tickets, call Westglow Resort and Spa at (828) 295-5146.
Taylor, a native North
Carolinian, is famous for a string of hit songs in the 1970s and ’80s,
including his original compositions "Carolina In My Mind," "Fire
and Rain" and "Sweet Baby James."
He has also scored hit
singles with cover versions of other songwriters' songs, including Carol King's
"You've Got a Friend," Inez and Charlie Foxx's
"Mockingbird" (with Carly Simon) and the Holland-Dozier-Holland tune,
"How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You."
In 2008, a collection of his
cover tunes, titled "Covers," reached the No. 4 position on the
Billboard Top 100 Albums chart.
Taylor has won the Grammy
Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Male in 1971 for "You've Got a
Friend," in 1977 for "Handy Man" and in 2001 for "Don't Let
Me Be Lonely Tonight."
He also won Grammys
for Best Pop Album in 1998 for "Hourglass" and for Best Country
Collaboration with Vocals in 2003 for "How's the World Treating You"
with singer Alison Krauss.
