Inmate escapes in Roan Mountain

by Kellen Moore

Law enforcement is searching for a non-violent offender who walked away from work detail Tuesday morning in Roan Mountain, Tenn.

Grady Edwards, 36, is described as a white man with blue eyes who stands 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs about 167 pounds, according to Cindy Dunning, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Correction.

Edwards was convicted of theft of property and burglary in Union and Anderson counties in Tennessee, Dunning said. His sentence began in January and was set to end in November 2017, according to the Department of Correction website.

He would have been eligible for parole next year, Dunning said.

Edwards was a minimum-custody inmate housed at the Northeast Correctional Complex Annex. Both the TDOC Office of Investigations and local law enforcement officers are searching for Edwards, Dunning said. North Carolina is among the areas where they are looking, she said.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story misstated the town where Edwards was imprisoned. The story has been corrected.
