Hook, line and sinker

Saturday welcomed the opening of trout season and one of the busiest fishing holes to be found was Broyhill Lake in Blowing Rock. The 34th annual Blowing Rock Trout Derby was taking place, drawing fishermen of all ages. The derby is a community event where young anglers ages 11 and younger are allowed to fish for trout in the recently stocked Broyhill Lake, and older anglers can fish in the Middle Fork of the New River and other waterways. The fun began at sunrise and prizes were to be awarded for 'first fish,' 'biggest fish,' 'smallest fish' and other categories by the end of the day. Results were not available at presstime. Joining in the fun is Emma Grace Hamilton and her grandfather, Homer Hamilton from Lenoir, as they pose with a trout that Emma just landed from Broyhill Lake. Photo by Jeff Eason
