Hole opens in Tanger Outlets driveway
General Manager Heidi Ellis said the collapse happened around 9:30 a.m. Monday in an area where several storm drains and pipes converge near the median between the entry and exit lanes. The hole is roughly 10 feet across.
"It's not a sinkhole per se," she said. "It's not a true sinkhole, it's just where some storm drains come all into one area."
Employees of Greene Construction who were working on a different project at the shops heard the noise and alerted the management to the collapse, she said. It was also spotted by employees entering the center for work.
The shopping center is closed Monday, but Ellis said Tanger Outlets tentatively plans to reopen at 10 a.m. Tuesday using a detour.
Ellis said the affected area held storm drain lines for the outlets and redirected a creek beneath the shopping center. She said she was not sure how long a complete repair might take.
