Heavy snow hits at rush hour

Snow began to fall around 4 p.m. in the Boone area Thursday,
but by 5 p.m., big, wet flakes were falling in abundance, quickly accumulating on roads and
highways.
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., issued an alert around 5 p.m. noting that snow was expected to fall at a rate of one inch per hour from 5:03 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.
The NWS said most of the snow from this weather event would fall before 9 p.m.
At 6:30 p.m., NWS reported minor flooding of the Watauga River in Sugar Grove.
A number of citizens have reported on Facebook of hearing thunder and seeing lightning.
