Heavy snow forces closings

by Staff Reports

The U.S. National Weather Service office in Blacksburg, Va., measured six inches of snow in Boone Friday morning, but reports of greater and lesser amounts varied across Watauga County.
In Watauga County, weather affected several closings:

Watauga County Schools were closed for students on Friday. For teachers, it is an optional workday. Two Rivers Community School and Mountain Pathways School also closed.

The Watauga campus of Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute closed, and Appalachian State University canceled all classes. AppalCART began operating on a delayed schedule, with selected routes beginning at 11 a.m.
N.C. Department of Transportation Division 11 received an average of four inches across its multi-county area. Temperatures climbed a few degrees above freezing Friday morning, which aided in road clearing efforts.
Linemen with Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation responded early Friday to outages affecting 72 members in Caldwell and Alexander counties. Blue Ridge Electric customers should report all outages to Blue Ridge Electric's PowerLine at (800) 448-2383. Blue Ridge employees remain on high alert due to weather and road conditions, which could lead to outages.
