Hearing scheduled on Scottish Inn rezoning

by Anna Oakes

A two-year effort to redevelop the Scottish Inn and Red Carpet Inn properties in Boone took a step forward Thursday with the scheduling of a special public hearing on a conditional district rezoning request.

The Boone Town Council voted to hold a public hearing on the request at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 3, at the Council Chambers.

Developer Stonegate Developers of Cornelius plans to build a mixed-use project at the site, which borders Blowing Rock Road and Faculty Street near McDonald's. Stonegate Developers partner Jeffrey Wakeman told the council last year that the project would include student housing units, retail space, a restaurant and an exercise facility.

Jim Deal, an attorney presenting Stonegate and property owner Jill Atfield Patel, said the developer hopes to relocate and daylight a portion of Boone Creek to alleviate flooding issues at the site.

"The design is working toward doing that," Deal said.

The Scottish Inn has been shuttered and fenced off since spring 2012, when the Boone Town Council affirmed a building inspector's May 2011 condemnation order to vacate, repair or demolish the structures because of dilapidated conditions.

Deal said that if the rezoning is approved and the developer closes on the property, demolition of the existing structures would take place immediately.
