Gospel music community mourns loss of Tony Greene
by Kellen Moore
Tony Greene, a gifted vocalist and Southern Gospel music promoter, died Tuesday at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Greene, 41, and his siblings sang together professionally as The Greenes, leading to several No. 1 songs and appearances at leading national concerts. He was also heavily involved in the Gospel Singing Jubilee, a multi-day concert held in Boone for almost 30 years.
Greene underwent a successful kidney transplant in August 2009, and his wife, TaRanda, provided the donor organ. He returned to traveling soon after, which he continued until additional health issues forced his hospitalization on Sept. 21, 2010.
Greene was born in Boone on Oct. 17, 1968. He is survived by his wife, TaRanda; children Isabella (age 6) and Jocelyn (age 2); his mother, Carolyn Greene; a brother, Tim Greene; sister, Kim Greene Hopper; and several nieces.
