Ga. man killed in U.S. 321 wreck
Paul Wuerzner, 25, was traveling south on U.S. 321 in a Chevrolet Cobalt when he went off the side of the road, overcorrected, crossed the center line and hit a Subaru Forester traveling north head-on near Niley Cook Road, said Trooper B.R. Alexander of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Wuerzner died at the scene, and nine others — all passengers in the Subaru — were injured in the 1:20 a.m. accident. Wuerzner is listed in the Appalachian State University directory as a junior studying computer information systems.
According to Alexander, the nine injured passengers were:
- Daniel Joseph Szymczyk of Charlotte (driver)
- Patrick Fontaine of Greensboro
- Frances Olave of Durham
- Jane Katherine Neeley of Durham
- Brock Romantic of Ohio
- Correy Dowd of Fort Bragg
- Stewart Cody Dowd of Fort Bragg
- Hannah McGill of Asheville
- Ashley Hlinak of Mooresville
Hlinak, 18, was flown from the Boone hospital to Johnson City Medical Center, Alexander said. She was no longer a patient there as of Monday afternoon, according to the hospital.
Alexander said he did not believe alcohol use was a factor in the accident, and no charges were filed.
