Flash flood watch in effect Tuesday until midnight

by Anna Oakes

A National Weather Service alert issued at 1:50 p.m. advises a flash flood watch is in effect from 1:49 p.m. Tuesday to midnight on Wednesday.

"A slow moving upper level low will drift across North Carolina this afternoon and evening, providing support for moderate to occasionally heavy rain across the region," the alert stated.

Showers and thunderstorms are developing across the mountains south of Interstate 81, NWS indicated.

"These showers and thunderstorms will be slow moving and may begin to train, passing across the same locations repeatedly. Rain will be heavy at times this afternoon areawide, but especially along the Blue Ridge," the statement said.

"Saturated soil conditions in these areas may convert rainfall directly into runoff. Flash flooding will enhance the threat of landslides across the area," it said.

Heavy rains dumped between five and seven inches of rain on the High Country between Saturday and Monday, causing creeks and valleys to flood and several small landslides.
