Escaped inmate surrenders near Asheville

by Staff Reports

Escaped inmate John R. Fullwood surrendered to officers Sunday evening, about 20 miles from where he walked off from a work assignment in Asheville two days prior.

Fullwood, 51, left on foot from a work assignment at the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville on Friday morning, according to the N.C. Department of Correction. He was serving a six- to eight-year sentence at Buncombe Correctional Center for firing a gun into an occupied vehicle and was due for release in September 2016.

Telephone tips about his whereabouts led officers to a home on Incinerator Road, just off I-40 between Canton and Clyde. While officers were in the area, Fullwood emerged from the woods and turned himself in around 5:20 p.m. Sunday, according to the DOC.

Officers took Fullwood to the Mountain View Correctional Center in Spruce Pine, and he will face a charge of felony escape.
