Officers caught Michael Lee Calloway, 39, of Buncombe County while he was swimming in Price Lake on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock.
Calloway was last seen around noon on Thursday when he left his work detail paving crew on Old Turnpike Road, according to local law enforcement.
Currently held at the Caldwell Correctional Center, a minimum-security unit, Calloway's total incarceration term is a little over 15 years on charges of habitual felon, larceny, larceny of a motor vehicle, robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon and felony breaking and entering, according to the N.C. Department of Public Safety.
He was due for release in May 2016.
A command post was set up on Thursday at Shull's Mill Road and a number of agencies gathered to participate in searching for Calloway, including the Watauga County Sheriff's Office, Boone Police Department, Blowing Rock Police Department and National Park Service.
Calloway is the second inmate to escape from custody this week.
On Monday, another inmate, being transported to Watauga County from Alexander County, escaped custody at the Food Lion in Watauga. He was apprehended when the vehicle he was driving crashed in Washington County, Va.
