Polls opened in Watauga County at 8 a.m. Thursday, and 950 people cast ballots on the first day of the early voting period, said Jane Hodges, Watauga County elections director.

“We are thrilled with the number for the first day,” Hodges said. “We just hope that we have more tomorrow.”

The early voting site at the Watauga County Courthouse opened Thursday and is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Nov. 2, as well as from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Nine additional elections officials assisted on Thursday, Hodges said, and wait times were not long.
“We were able to keep the lines down,” she said. “Most were able to walk straight in.”

A second early voting location will open in the Price Lake Room of the Plemmons Student Union at Appalachian State University from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays from Oct. 22 to Nov. 2. A new early voting site will be offered from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 at the Foscoe Fire Department on N.C. 105.

Voters may visit any of the three early voting sites, regardless of where they live.

Anyone who missed the Oct. 12 registration deadline may register and vote on the same day during the early voting period; bring a document with your current name and address, such as a driver’s license, utility bill or paycheck. Registration will not take place on Election Day.
