Dollar General considering Deep Gap store
by Kellen Short
Dollar General is considering building a store off U.S. 421
in Deep Gap, according to company and county representatives.
If constructed, it would be Watauga County's third Dollar General.
The chain is looking at a site on Yuma Lane, less than a mile from the intersection of U.S. 421 and U.S. 221 in Deep Gap, said Watauga County Planning and Inspections Director Joe Furman. He said no site plan has been submitted yet to his department.
"We are still in the due diligence phase for the site in Deep Gap, N.C.," said Dollar General spokeswoman Kelsey Layer. "During this phase we are trying to make sure the site is a good location for a Dollar General store. I cannot confirm that there will be a Dollar General."
Dollar General is currently constructing a store on U.S. 321/421 in Vilas next to the Quality Plus gas station. The chain also recently replaced its Boone store with a new location near New Market Center.
The Deep Gap site may soon be busy with activity, as Furman said his office has issued a building permit for another lot in the same commercial subdivision. The lot will host a small manufacturing plant for the Trusco Manufacturing Company, which makes paint striper machines for grass and pavement, he said.
Trusco is currently based in Ocala, Fla., but is moving operations, he said. Furman said he didn't expect it to be a large job creator because the company is family-owned and run.
