Deadline for registering to vote nears

by Anna Oakes

To vote in the May 6 primary, citizens who are not already registered in the county must register with the Watauga County Board of Elections by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 11.

As a result of law changes enacted by the General Assembly last year, registering to vote during the early voting period is no longer an option.

Citizens must be 18 years old to vote in the primary and must be a resident of Watauga County at least 30 days prior to the election. In addition, citizens who are already registered in the county but who have moved must change the address with their registration information.

Early voting begins Thursday, April 24, and continues through Saturday, May 3. Primary Election Day is on Tuesday, May 6.

The voting law changes enacted last year include a new provision requiring voters to present a photo ID to vote, but that it doesn't take effect until 2016.

However, county poll workers will be asking voters this year if they have a photo ID, and if not, they will be provided with information on how to obtain one for free.

For more information, call the Watauga County Elections Office at (828) 265-8061 or visit the office, located inside the courthouse at 842 W. King St., Suite 6, in Boone.
