County seeks to name bridge for Mast
by Kellen Short
Watauga County commissioners will consider a proposal Tuesday to name a bridge on U.S. 421 over the South Fork New River in honor of fallen Deputy William Mast Jr.
Mast joined the Watauga County Sheriff's Office in 2009 and was killed July 26, 2012, while responding to a call in Deep Gap. He was 23.
Chairman Nathan Miller will present a resolution requesting the change, which will be forwarded to the N.C. Department of Transportation for consideration. The Boone Town Council also would need to adopt a resolution supporting the change for it to be approved by the state, according to a memo in the board meeting packet.
If the resolution is approved Tuesday, a public hearing will likely be held Aug. 20 on the proposal. The bridge is not currently named.
The board also will consider a second resolution Tuesday honoring Mast as the anniversary of his death approaches. The resolution asks that all flags be flown at half-staff July 26 and that all residents observe a one-minute moment of remembrance at 10 a.m. July 26 by ceasing work and marking the moment by ringing bells, blowing whistles or sounding sirens.
The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Commissioners' Board Room at 814 W. King St. in Boone.
