County hopes rec center charrette makes a splash

by Scott Nicholson

Watauga County officials want to hear what people expect out of a new indoor recreation center, holding a charrette on March 18 to get public input.

The commissioners have committed up to $50,000 to get an architectural design for a proposed center, which has been on the county's master plan list for at least 20 years. The commissioners made their first commitment to the project when they assembled several parcels in Boone for the new high school site, setting aside an area for future construction.

The county issued a request for qualifications in February, drawing the attention of 19 architects across the region. Many of them met with county staff to discuss proposals, giving the commissioners suggestions on the best use of available space.
