Council to consider towing ordinance change

by Anna Oakes

The Boone Town Council will consider a draft amendment to the town code prohibiting the towing of occupied vehicles at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

The meeting takes place at 6:30 p.m. at the Council Chambers, located at 1500 Blowing Rock Road. The draft code amendment states that "no towing company may attach a towing vehicle to an occupied vehicle, tow a vehicle which is occupied, nor demand payment pursuant to this chapter in connection with an occupied vehicle. This chapter does not authorize a towing company to attempt to impede or block an occupied vehicle from being removed from a parking space or lot."

The council will also consider a recommendation from the Cultural Resources Advisory Board to extend the Southern Appalachian Historical Association's license for use of Daniel Boone Park until April 11. The board has asked SAHA to provide estimated costs and a timeline for repairs at the park's amphitheater, where SAHA produces the outdoor drama "Horn in the West," by Feb. 24.

Public Utilities Director Rick Miller will seek the council's approval of a contract with Schnabel Engineering for the Winkler's Creek Lake Dam Emergency Action Plan. Miller will also request that the council schedule a Water Use Committee meeting in March or April to discuss an extension of the town's water ordinance.

Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman will appear before the council at the continuation of its meeting on Thursday, when he'll seek confirmation of Boone's commitment to work with the county to install a Watauga County Law Enforcement Memorial at the Sheriff's Office campus.
