Contractor issues delay 321 bike lanes

Bike lanes are still in the plans for a section of U.S. 321 near ASU, despite months of delays.
Dean Ledbetter, Division 11 traffic engineer for the N.C. Department of Transportation, said a subcontractor for a resurfacing project on U.S. 321 from Rivers Street to N.C. 105 late last summer has not completed the striping for bike lanes there. As a result, NCDOT will complete the work itself.
"We're going to have to send our crews in to take care of it," Ledbetter said.
In early 2012, Ledbetter committed to work with town officials to consider bike lanes for any future resurfacing project in Boone. But the resurfacing project on U.S. 321 was well under way last summer before NCDOT communicated with the contractor, Maymead Inc., about adding bike lanes.
The contractor is not paid for work not performed, Ledbetter said.
"It's gotten so far into winter ... most likely the guys are going to wait until spring, probably right after (Appalachian State University) graduation," he said.
