Community remembers Deputy Mast

by Kellen Short

Community members observed a moment of remembrance Friday for Deputy William Mast Jr., who was killed a year ago in the line of duty.

Offices and businesses lowered their flags to half-staff at the request of Watauga County commissioners, who approved a resolution honoring the three-year deputy at their July 16 meeting.

At 10 a.m., residents also paused to note the service Mast provided to his community. Four members of the Watauga Community Band gathered at the corner of King and Depot streets to ring handbells in his memory.

And the usually noisy police radio went silent.

"Please hold traffic for a moment of silence for our fallen brother," a dispatcher said at 10 a.m.

The county also is working to name a bridge on U.S. 421 in Mast's memory and to create a memorial near the Watauga County Sheriff's Office to honor all local officers killed in the line of duty.
