It doesn’t matter which logo is on Appalachian State’s helmets. Coastal Carolina can’t seem to play well at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
In two previous games when Coastal Carolina visited Appalachian State, the Mountaineers wore the familiar “Block A” on their hats.
On Saturday, the Mountaineers wore retro Yosef logos. Either way, the Mountaineers continued to dominate Coastal.
Kidd Brewer Stadium continued to be a house of horrors for Coastal Carolina, especially in the first half. Appalachian State blitzed the Chanticleers for 34 points in the first two quarters, and rolled to a 55-14 victory in front of 27,619, many of whom lost interest and left at halftime.
Mountaineers coach Jerry Moore said there was no secret to Appalachian State’s win.
“I’d say we played well,” Moore said. “We have huge respect for Coastal. I can’t convince you how we practiced this week preparing for those guys.”
Appalachian State (3-2) outscored Coastal Carolina 61-0 in the first half of the first two meetings between the teams. The Mountaineers took a 30-0 halftime lead in a 2005 30-3 victory, and a 31-0 advantage in a 45-28 FCS playoffs victory in 2006.
This time, Appalachian State grabbed a 21-0 first quarter lead and a 34-14 halftime advantage. The Mountaineers outgained the Chanticleers 405-185 by halftime and 684-304 for the game.
ASU running back Steven Miller sparked the Mountaineers’ attack by gaining 202 yards on 17 carries and scoring touchdown runs of 3 and 75 yards, the second score coming on ASU’s first play of the third quarter. He averaged 11.9 yards per carry, and had 118 yards by halftime.
“We knew we had to come out and run the ball,” Miller said. “Our offensive line has been so successful these past few weeks, the holes were wide open. They practiced hard, we practiced hard and I made the right reads.”
It was the first 200-yard game by a running back since Kevin Richardson reached the plateau in 2006. It was also the third highest given up by Coastal Carolina in its program’s history. Appalachian State running attack, capped by a touchdown run by Michael Frazier with 2:28 left in the game that put ASU up 55-14, gained 399 yards on the ground in the game.
Quarterback Jamal Jackson and receiver Sean Price took care of the passing game. Price caught seven passes for 119 yards and 69-yard touchdown with 4:50 left in the first quarter that put the Mountaineers in front 14-0.
Jackson completed 18-of-26 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns. ASU tight end Drew Bailey made a diving catch on a 23-yard touchdown pass, which gave the Mountaineers a 21-0 lead with 14 seconds left in the first quarter.
“We had a lot of play-action installed this week,” Miller said. “I think that kept them on their heels a little bit. After the running game was a little more successful, they were more focused on the running game, which opened up the pass game.”
ASU hosts Southern Conference rival Elon on Saturday.
