Child airlifted after wreck in Vilas

by Allison Haver

A 7-month-old child was airlifted from the scene of a Vilas car crash on Wednesday after the vehicle he was in flipped.

N.C. State Trooper Randall Townsend said the wreck occurred around 9:50 a.m. on Wednesday.

Darker Weah, 26, of Greensboro, passed several vehicles in a no-passing lane, in his 2000 Nissan Altima, while heading toward Boone.

Weah dropped a tire off of the left side of the road and over-corrected causing the vehicle to overturn multiple times, Townsend said.

The child was thrown from the car, where he had been in a child seat next to his mother, Patience Wornee of Johnson City Tennessee.

Weah and Wornee were treated for minor injuries at the scene while the 7-month old was airlifted to the Johnson City Medical Center.

Townsend said the child was in stable condition.

Weah was charged with careless and reckless driving and a child seat violation.

Cove Creek Fire and First Responders, Watauga Medics and Watauga Rescue all converged on the scene along with Watauga Deputies, and the State Patrol.
