CCC&TI offers online tutoring
by Anna Oakes
Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute announced Tuesday that a free online tutoring service is available for curriculum students through Smarthinking.com. Through a live chat or email, students can receive help with a variety of subjects, including math, reading, business, accounting, sciences, nursing, allied health and more.
"It's an effort to make tutoring available to everybody, even in the middle of the night," said Nancy Leonard, coordinator of academic support for CCC&TI's Watauga campus.
CCC&TI's Academic Support Center will continue to offer in-person tutoring services on campus. Leonard said the campus offers in-person tutoring in about 11 subjects 56 hours a week, in addition to a full-time writing center. Students can drop in without appointments.
"Math is the most popular subject," Leonard said.
But the new service will extend assistance to students working away from the college, including those who take classes online.
"Right now we have one student who lives in Alabama," Leonard said. "She'll be able to get tutoring through Smarthinking 24 hours a day."
According to CCC&TI, 90 percent of tutors on Smarthinking.com have a master's degree or higher in their field, offering students expert assistance with assignments.
In addition, Leonard said, Smarthinking.com offers an online medical writing center, offering students assistance, not only with grammar and punctuation, but also with content.
"We have lots of medical programs here," Leonard said. "I just think that's awesome."
