Brush fires hit High Country
by Kellen Moore
Two brush fires broke out in Watauga County on Tuesday afternoon, one causing damage to a porch in the Brightwood community in Triplett.
Firefighters from Stewart Simmons Volunteer Fire Department, Deep Gap Volunteer Fire Department and N.C. Forest Service responded to the first at about 2:30 p.m. near Morning Glory Trail in the Brightwood community.
Forest Ranger Mark Hildebran said the fire burned about five acres and caused about $500 in damage to a porch.
Hildebran said they were still investigating how the fire started near the edge of the house. No one was home at the time, he said.
A second brush fire was reported near the 4300 block of Rominger Road in western Watauga County shortly after the first.
Hildebran said nine fires occurred Tuesday in the six-county N.C. Forest Service district amid a drop in humidity.
