Brown Mountain OHV Area closed due to wildfire

by Staff Reports

The U.S. Forest Service has temporarily closed the Brown Mountain Off Highway Vehicle Area today due to a wildfire located in between the east side of the Brown Mountain OHV Area and Wilson Creek on the Pisgah National Forest, Grandfather Ranger District.

The Area is closed to provide for visitor and firefighter safety and will remain closed until the fire's conditions allow for the area to re-open.

The Brown Mountain wildfire is around 15 acres in size and was caused by a lightning strike from the severe storms that swept through Caldwell County yesterday morning.

Fire officials are currently monitoring the fire, and about seven District Employees and a helicopter are assigned to handle the fire.

The NC Forest Service and Collettsville Volunteer Fire Department assisted in reporting and locating the fire.
