Boone woman wins $40,000 in lottery
A Boone woman has won $40,000 in the N.C. Education Lottery's Mega Millions drawing.
Carolyn Hagaman purchased the winning ticket at the Wilco convenience store at 159 Old East King Street in Boone, according to lottery spokesman Ryan Kennemur.
Hagaman won the state's biggest payout in the March 12 Mega Millions drawing, securing her prize by matching four of the five numbers plus the Megaball. The winning numbers were 9, 12, 19, 20 and 30, while the Megaball was 39.
Because Hagaman selected the "Megaplier," she won four times the ordinary winnings of $10,000.
A total of 8,950 people won prizes in the March 12 drawing, but no one in North Carolina won as much as Hagaman, lottery data shows. The jackpot that day was $41 million.
The Old East King Street store has seen big winners before. In October 2010, the store sold a $30,000 winning Powerball ticket to Joe Shoemake of Blowing Rock.
