Boone police to step up crosswalk enforcement

by Staff Reports

Boone Police Department will step up its enforcement of crosswalk and pedestrian right-of-way laws starting Monday, the department announced Friday.

Police urged motorists to be vigilant of pedestrian traffic and exercise patience when traveling.

State law requires that motorists yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. N.C. General Statute 20-173 states that where traffic-control signals are not in place or in operation, drivers shall slow down or stop to yield to a pedestrian crossing in any marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at or near an intersection.
