Boone council hopes to hire new manager by summer

by Anna Oakes

The Boone Town Council met with a consultant this week to discuss the search process for a new Boone town manager.

The council last month selected Springsted Inc. from a group of three consultants to aid the town in the search process, but the council asked to meet with the consultant prior to finalizing a contract, Boone Mayor Andy Ball said.

Ball said the council met with Springsted Senior Vice President John Anzivino on Monday to discuss services to be offered and a general timeline for the search. Following the discussion, the council directed staff and the town attorney to draft a contract to be considered for approval at the Feb. 18 council meeting.

"We were encouraged by their expertise in that area," Ball said.

The council will work with community leaders to develop a position description by mid-March, Ball said, with a goal to make an offer to a candidate by June.

Ball said he expected the consultant's contract amount to be in the range of $15,000 to $16,000 but that the amount could change if additional services are required.

The council in December voted to amend Town Manager Greg Young's contract to set a retirement date of Dec. 31, 2014. Young was eligible to retire Jan. 31 but agreed to stay on to assist with the transition to a new manager.

Young became Boone's town manager in October 1991 and has spent 36 years in the public service sector.
