by Anna Oakes
The town of Boone's Planning Commission, Historic Preservation Commission and Affordable Housing Task Force are scheduled to meet this week.
The Planning Commission meets Monday, Feb. 10, at 6 p.m. at the Council Chambers, located at 1500 Blowing Rock Road. The commission is scheduled to hold training on Planning Commission functions and ethics.
The Historic Preservation Commission meets Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 3:30 p.m. at the Planning & Inspections Department conference room at 680 W. King St. Formed in 2007, the HPC has the authority to identify historic properties or districts within the town that, if approved by the Boone Town Council, would require specific procedures for any exterior construction, reconstruction, alteration, restoration or demolition.
The commission on Tuesday will elect officers and continue its work on historic design guidelines. It will also discuss the conversion of the HPC to a quasi-judicial board and the development of a certificate of appropriateness. For any major changes to the exterior of a designated historic landmark or building within a historic district, a certificate of appropriateness would be required prior to the issuance of a building permit or other permits.
The town's Affordable Housing Task Force meets Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 5:30 p.m. in the Planning & Inspections conference room. The group is also scheduled to elect officers and discuss affordable housing options and the identification of areas for redevelopment or development of workforce housing.
