Boone Blockbuster to close May 30

by Anna Oakes

The Boone Blockbuster video store location will be closing May 30, store officials confirmed Monday.

Barbara Ellis, director of marketing for Colorado-based Blockbuster LLC, confirmed the location will be liquidated and closed by the end of May.

"The store is closing because the real estate has been sold," Ellis said in an email. "At this time, I cannot release the name of the buyer as the contracts have not closed fully, and it is part of our confidentiality agreement."

However, the transfer of the deed for the property had not been recorded at the Watauga County Register of Deeds office as of Monday. A sign posted on the parcel's Blowing Rock Road frontage indicated it was listed by Charlotte-based development firm Crosland Southeast.

Signs posted on the video store's windows indicate that all merchandise in the store is being sold.

The video store chain has struggled to compete with companies such as Netflix and Redbox. Blockbuster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2010 and was sold to satellite TV service provider DISH Network.

The store, located on 702 Blowing Rock Road, is on a block with a number of vacant properties, including the Scottish Inn, which was shuttered after being condemned in 2011. The inn's owner recently told the Boone Town Council the property is under contract.

Adjacent to Blockbuster, the building that once housed Quizno's and Frogurt is empty, as is the building across the street at 603 Blowing Rock Road, former home of The Library Restaurant & Pub. That property is owned by the Winkler Organization, which has been waiting for the town of Boone to enact planned overlay zoning district guidelines for the area before moving forward with a project there.
