Board may hire WHS football coach

The Board of Education's closed-session meeting tonight may lead to the approval of a new high school football coach but will not deal with recent superintendent issues, Chairman Lee Warren said.

The meeting, announced Tuesday, will begin at 6:45 p.m. at Mabel Elementary. The board already had scheduled a town hall meeting with parents to begin at 7 p.m.

The Watauga High School football coach position has been vacant since December when interim coach Tom Wright stepped down. Wright continues to serve as athletic director and took the position after Coach Tim Pruitt resigned in June 2012.

"I feel like the program is in a good place," Wright said at the time. "We're in a place where someone else can come in and take over the job and has a vision as to where they'd like this program to go, say in the next five years."

The Pioneers have been hunting for their fifth head football coach since 1999.

Warren said the closed-session agenda was added Thursday because the board already planned to be together at Mabel and because notifications needed to be made on the coaching job. Warren said he expects action to be taken after the closed session.

He said the board would not be discussing recent issues surrounding Superintendent David Kafitz.

"It's not going to be about the superintendent," he said.
