Blowing Rock ER to close by Oct. 1

The Blowing Rock Hospital emergency room will close on or about Oct. 1, hospital officials confirmed Thursday.

The 24-hour emergency room will stop operating as the hospital prepares to transition to the new Chestnut Ridge at Blowing Rock, a post-acute care center to be constructed about two and a half miles away, said Gillian Baker, vice president of corporate communications.

"It's nothing really different than what we've been planning all along," she said.

The Blowing Rock Hospital will now offer only post-acute care services. Watauga Medical Center typically covers the majority of the county's emergency medicine needs.

Baker said there were not many staff members involved in the department, and that most of them have or will transition to other positions within the health care system.

Baker did not respond to other questions by presstime, saying a news release would be sent at a later date.

The Blowing Rock Hospital first opened on Chestnut Street in 1952.
