Black Friday deals woo shoppers again
An estimated 147 million people nationwide planned to shop Black Friday weekend, and stores in Watauga County were packed to the gills with their share of the shoppers.
Despite the crowds, the National Retail Federation study found that the number of people who said they planned to shop was slightly down from the 152 million who planned to do so last year.
Walmart shift manager Sandy Roten said she knew of no unusual incidents overnight at the Boone store. She said she arrived for work around 5 a.m. Friday morning to crowds that had already lessened.
Meredith Golden, manager of the Boone Mall, lamented that the mall’s opening time crept all the way up to midnight to follow Belk’s lead.
She said that she told the Belk manager that she would put up a fight if the corporate office moved the opening time any earlier next year.
“I’m putting my foot down. We are not opening on Thanksgiving,” Golden said.
