Bill would increase divorce waiting period to two years
by Anna Oakes
A bill filed in the N.C. Senate Monday would increase the time and legal requirements for obtaining a divorce in North Carolina.
Senate Bill 518, the "Healthy Marriage Act," would change current statutes to require a two-year waiting period for divorce instead of a one-year separation. Spouses would not be required to live separate and apart from each other during the period, under the proposed bill.
The legislation would require spouses seeking divorce to complete courses on improving communication skills and conflict resolution, and -- if the couple had children -- a course on the impact of divorce on children.
