The North Carolina Democratic Party announced via Twitter Saturday that Andy Ball of Boone has been elected to the position of third vice chair of the state party.

Ball won election over Jason Jenkins of Granville County and Chris Hardee of Dare County at a meeting of the party's State Executive Committee in Durham Saturday.

Ball has been a member of the Boone Town Council since 2009, when he was the first undergraduate student elected to the council. He was re-elected to a four-year term in 2011. Last fall, Ball served as a North Carolina delegate at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.

"The duties of third vice chair have traditionally included outreach and cultivation of the youth electorate in this state, a direct responsibility of mine since taking the oath of office as national committeeman of the Young Democrats of North Carolina," Ball wrote in statement announcing his candidacy for the third vice chair position.

Speaking with Watauga Democrat last month, Ball said he "absolutely" would be able to maintain his duties as a Boone Town Council member while serving as third vice chairman of the state party.

"This position would serve to complement my work on behalf of the town of Boone," he said.
