Asst. superintendent to be named Monday

by Kellen Moore

If all goes as planned, Watauga County Schools will announce a new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction at the school board meeting Monday.

To allow time for the announcement and introductions, the Sept. 10 meeting will move from 7 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

The board will likely open the meeting at 6:15 p.m., go into closed session to vote on the hire, then reopen the meeting for the announcement and introductions, according to WCS spokesman Marshall Ashcraft.

After the introductions, the board will proceed with the rest of its regular agenda.

Former Associate Superintendent Scarlet Davis resigned effective Aug. 1 for undisclosed reasons. That decision ended her four-year contract a year early, and the school system provided two months' severance pay of $8,384.71 per month.

Applications for the position were accepted through Aug. 24.

Superintendent David Kafitz said Thursday that he could not provide any hints about the selection but that he believed the community would be impressed with the individual.
