The Watauga County Board of Education approved the selection of David Fonseca as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction Monday.

Fonseca, a native of Mexico, currently serves as assistant superintendent of instructional services for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.

Prior to that role, Fonseca served from 2008-11 as principal of H.M. Arndt Middle School in Hickory. He has performed in every position from school bus driver and soccer/basketball coach to teacher, principal and assistant superintendent.

Fonseca received a bachelor's degree from the University of Veracruz in Mexico, a master's degree from UNC-Charlotte and a doctorate in educational leadership from Appalachian State University.

Fonseca was selected from 71 applicants for the position, including several from outside North Carolina and one from Puerto Rico. Four underwent interviews with an eight-member interview team.

Fonseca credited his mother and father in particular for helping him to rise from poverty and for encouraging him to never stop learning.

"I look forward to my time and our time together here in Watauga County," Fonseca said after being approved by the board Monday. "Thank you for your recommendation."
