Applebee's to host animal fundraiser

by Melanie Marshall

Pancakes for puppies and flapjacks for felines will be on the menu on Saturday, March 27 at Applebee's Neighbor Grill & Bar to benefit the Watauga Humane Society.

Beginning at 7:30 a.m., WHS board members and volunteers will begin serving pancakes and sausage with choice of orange juice or coffee, for a minimum $7 donation. The event lasts until 10 a.m.

The first pancake benefit was held in October last year, raising more than $600. Ellen Jo Kraemer, of the humane society, said the organization hopes to partner with Applebee's to hold the event semi-annually. The restaurant donates all the food.

Tickets are available in advance at the WHS animal shelter located at 200 Casey Lane and Bare Essentials Natural Market on Boone Heights Drive in Boone. Tickets are also available at the door. For more information, call Claudia Strickland at (828) 963-4649.

While filling up their stomachs, WHS hopes attendees will help fill the stomachs of pets across the High Country. The humane society pet food pantry, which is distributed to distressed families and elderly people who are in need of pet assistance, has run dry. Kraemer said pet food donations would be accepted at the pancake breakfast.

The Watauga Humane Society shelter is open Tuesday through Friday, 12:30 to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 12:30 to 5 p.m., closed Monday. For more information on adopting a pet or making a donation, call (828) 264-7865. Photos of pets available for adoption are available online at http://www.wataugahumanesociety.org.
