Aho man dies after four-wheeler wreck Friday

An Aho man died Friday evening
after a four-wheeler wreck in the 300 block of
Robert Dudley Townsend, who
went by Bobby, was riding less than a mile from his home when he apparently
swerved, overcorrected and flipped on the vehicle at about 6:30 p.m., said his
wife of 38 years, Sabra Townsend.
Townsend was airlifted to
Townsend, 55, was born and
raised in Banner Elk and moved to the Boone area as a young boy, his wife said.
He owned and operated Townsend Painting Company.
In addition to his wife, Sabra
Tolbert Townsend, he is survived by his parents, Robert and Ellen Townsend of
Boone; one daughter, Ellen Jean Shook and husband, Glenn, of Deep Gap; one son,
Robert Edward Townsend and wife, Amy, of Deep Gap; three grandchildren, Hunter
and Hayla Shook and Brahm Townsend; a God-daughter, Lindsey Hicks of Boone; and
three brothers, Charlie S. Townsend and wife, Joanna, of Gastonia, Danny
Townsend and wife, Judy, of Blowing Rock, and Michael Townsend of Boone.
Bobby Townsend was a quiet and
private person who loved spending time with his grandkids, his wife said. He
didn't have many hobbies, but he enjoyed tinkering with engines and collecting
coins, and he was a major Dale Earnhardt fan, relatives said. He also dearly loved
his basset hound, Ruby.
"He was a very good
neighbor," Sabra Townsend said. "He would help anybody he
could."
Townsend had owned his
four-wheeler for only a couple of months, his wife said, and may have been
going to visit a friend when the accident occurred.
