Aho man dies after four-wheeler wreck Friday

by Kellen Moore

An Aho man died Friday evening after a four-wheeler wreck in the 300 block of Sampson Road.

Robert Dudley Townsend, who went by Bobby, was riding less than a mile from his home when he apparently swerved, overcorrected and flipped on the vehicle at about 6:30 p.m., said his wife of 38 years, Sabra Townsend.

Townsend was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center with head trauma and internal injuries, but he never regained consciousness, Sabra Townsend said.

Townsend, 55, was born and raised in Banner Elk and moved to the Boone area as a young boy, his wife said. He owned and operated Townsend Painting Company.

In addition to his wife, Sabra Tolbert Townsend, he is survived by his parents, Robert and Ellen Townsend of Boone; one daughter, Ellen Jean Shook and husband, Glenn, of Deep Gap; one son, Robert Edward Townsend and wife, Amy, of Deep Gap; three grandchildren, Hunter and Hayla Shook and Brahm Townsend; a God-daughter, Lindsey Hicks of Boone; and three brothers, Charlie S. Townsend and wife, Joanna, of Gastonia, Danny Townsend and wife, Judy, of Blowing Rock, and Michael Townsend of Boone.

Bobby Townsend was a quiet and private person who loved spending time with his grandkids, his wife said. He didn't have many hobbies, but he enjoyed tinkering with engines and collecting coins, and he was a major Dale Earnhardt fan, relatives said. He also dearly loved his basset hound, Ruby.

"He was a very good neighbor," Sabra Townsend said. "He would help anybody he could."

Townsend had owned his four-wheeler for only a couple of months, his wife said, and may have been going to visit a friend when the accident occurred.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Laurel Fork Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Daniel Featherstone. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Townsend family, and online condolences can be left at http://www.austinandbarnesfuneralhome.com.
