ASU graduate's death investigated as homicide

by Staff Reports

A 31-year-old high school guidance counselor and former Appalachian State University student was found dead in her Newton apartment June 28, and police are investigating the incident as a homicide.

Margaret "Maggie" Elizabeth Daniels was found on the floor of her apartment by a man who was identified as her friend. An autopsy was performed, but investigators have not yet released the cause of death.

Daniels was a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and moved to North Carolina in 2005 to teach English and coach basketball at Newton-Conover High School, according to media reports. She was named the school district's teacher of the year in 2011.

Daniels left Newton-Conover High to pursue a master's degree in counseling from ASU, and she began working as a counselor at Discovery High School in Newton in 2013.

Daniels' family will receive friends from noon to 5 p.m. at Craciun Berry Funeral Home on Detroit Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. Her funeral will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 7, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Cleveland.

A memorial service has been planned for 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, at Newton-Conover High School.

The family has asked that donations be made in Daniels' name to Discovery High School.
