43 apply to be Boone downtown coordinator
by Anna Oakes
The town of Boone is currently reviewing 43 applications for its vacant downtown coordinator position, Human Resources Director Peri Moretz said.
The full-time staff position was created in 2011 as part of a new arrangement for administration of downtown tax revenues.
After two years of review, the town chose to continue its contract with the private nonprofit Downtown Boone Development Administration for administration of downtown programs and improvements, but it created a new town staff position to coordinate the efforts, replacing the former DBDA-hired director.
The position became available a few months ago, when Pilar Fotta was promoted to the new cultural resources director position after a year as downtown coordinator.
Although she is currently acting as cultural resources director, Fotta has continued to facilitate downtown projects until the coordinator's vacancy is filled. Fotta will also help train the new downtown coordinator.
Moretz said the town hopes to begin the hiring decision process "within the next week or so."
