2012 ELECTIONS GUIDE: Part I

by Kellen Moore

The Watauga Democrat is running a series of election guides in preparation for the 2012 elections. The guides began Sunday, Oct. 14 with the Watauga County Board of Commissioners and the Watauga County Board of Education.

Pick up the Watauga Democrat on Sunday, Oct. 21 for N.C. Senate and N.C. House of Representatives Elections Guides.

BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

The race for Watauga County Board of Commissioners pits Democrats against Republican for each of the three open seats.

With Republicans David Blust and Nathan Miller remaining on the board, Democrats would need to win all three races to assert voting authority on the board.

The two candidates with the most votes will receive four-year terms, while the candidate with the third most votes will receive a two-year term.

The candidates were asked to answer three questions in 100 words or less. Their responses have been edited for spelling, grammar and word count.

Questions:
1) If elected commissioner, what priorities do you believe need immediate attention?
2) What distinguishes you from current board members and your fellow candidates?
3) What aspect of serving on the Board of Commissioners do you believe will present the greatest challenge to you?

BOARD OF EDUCATION

Three seats are up for grabs this fall on the Watauga County Board of Education.

The winners will be tasked with leading a nine-school system under the direction of a new superintendent.

Although many of the candidates are supported by the local political parties, the race is nonpartisan and at-large.

The two candidates with the most votes will receive four-year terms, and the candidate who places third will receive a two-year term. The winning candidates will join Lee Warren and Delora Hodges on the board.

The candidates were asked to answer three questions in 100 words or less. Their responses have been edited for spelling, grammar and word limit.

Questions:
1) What distinguishes you from current board members and your fellow candidates?
2) What aspect of serving on the Board of Education do you believe will present the greatest challenge to you?
3) Choose one decision the Board of Education has made in the past few months. Explain why you agree or disagree with that decision. How would you have approached it?
