Saving a childhood memory

Thank you Boone. I was thrilled to read in the Watauga Democrat that Boone was able to purchase the Appalachian Theater.

Oh, the memories of old Boone. I grew up in the 50s and 60s in the Zionville (Mabel) area. Going to the movies was a treat. Admission was 25 cents. A box of popcorn, a candy bar and a coke were also 25 cents for all three. There wasn't really anything else to entertain in Boone. Of course, Appalachian Theater was the place to go on dates.

I would love to see the theater used as a move theater. My husband and I took our kids there and we continued enjoying movies there when toward the end it cost $1, and then $1.50.

I was heartsick when the theater closed. I was afraid what happened to the Daniel Boone Hotel would be the same for the theater.

I used to sit in Dr. Jack Lawrence's dentist chair staring at the hotel. I couldn't believe the fate of such a special landmark.

Too many special businesses have disappeared during the years: Crest 5 & 10, Belk, Newton, Walkers Jewelry, Stallings Carolina Drug Store, Dixie music store, Cato's, Church's. So many have gone.Thank you for saving what has been part of our childhood and our lives.
