Salute to our town
What an uplifting and dignified program. The community band did an outstanding job providing Sousa marches and other patriotic tunes, the young drama group from Ashe County gave us a glimpse of history in the enduring accomplishments of our forefathers through the Declaration of Independence, and the local veterans' groups recognized everyone present who had served in any branch of the military -- and extended a special honor for the service of Joseph Branch.
Only in small towns such as ours can we truly feel the family ties of community when such programs are conducted. It was refreshing and liberating to be able to hear a prayer in public prefacing the ceremony, to join in the Pledge of Allegiance as one voice and to clap unabashedly for those who vowed to give their lives for their country in the line of duty. Thanks to all who planned, implemented and participated in this veterans' program through the setup of chairs, the practice sessions for musicians, line memorization for the skit, cooperation of the Boone Mall merchants and those in charge of the program itself.
At Thanksgiving time, this is yet another blessing for which we may give thanks.
